Lonicera involucrata
Black twinberry is a deciduous shrub with shiny, black berries that grow in two's. Berries will be encased in red to maroon bracts. Leaves are elliptic, lance-shaped, with pointed tips.
The berries of black twinberry are generally not considered to be palatable, though they are a favorite of grizzly bears. Many Interior people called these bear berries or grizzly berries for that reason. Some groups also believed the berries would make one insane. A tea can be made from the twigs, sticks, and/or leaves for sore throats or used externally for broken bones or sores. It may also be used in arthritis medicine.
Black twinberry is found throughout much of the coastal region, down to northern California, and throughout the Rocky Mountains. It grows well at a wide range of elevations in moist or wet soil.
