Viburnum edule

Summary:
high-bush cranberry, squashberry
Description:

High-bush cranberry is a deciduous shrub with small white flowers on short stems that become red to orange fruit in late summer. The leaves have 3 lobes with sharply toothed edges and are hairy underneath.

Cultural Narrative:

High-bush cranberry was used by almost all groups. They were harvested in late fall after the first frost as it is said this sweetens the tart berries. The fruit may be eaten fresh or boiled, or sometimes prepared with bear grease. They may also have been mixed with serviceberry.

Bark may be used for coughs or sore throats. The bark may also be smoked. Parish et al. (1996) indicate the Ktunaxa hollowed out the stems for pipes.

Location Description:

Viburnum edule grows throughout much of northern North America and is found in dark moist to wet forests, wamps, and seepages.
